What is Aikido?

Hello and welcome to the website of Detroit Yoshinkan Aikido (Shugyokan). Aikido is a Japanese martial art founded by Morhei Ueshiba. It is an art that emphasis the use of circular movements to counter an attack. It is the official art of the Tokyo Riot Police Department. Aikido is an effective martial art utilized world wide by law enforcement agencies. The beauty of Aikido is that it does not rely on strength. Consequently, athlecticism, strength and speed are not required to effectively execute the techniques. Aikido can be practiced by individuals of all ages.




Benefits of Aikido

Aikido is a physical activity and with any physical activity provides the potential benefit of overall health. Aikido practice can also result in better concentration, improved flexibility, and improved strength. However, with any physical activity you should always seek the permission of your physician.

Mission Statement

The primary mission of the Shugyokan is to promote the teachings of Yoshinkan Aikido in a manner that is both fun and informative. Emphasis is placed on learning basic movements (the building blocks of Aikido) and basic techniques.
